The Yankees Rookie Leagues Radar

By: Carlos Peña (YankeesFarm)

The Yankees farm system is bottom heavy and at the lower levels is where you will currently find some of the more exciting prospects in the system, and with many of them graduating from the Rookies Leagues here is my list of Yankees prospects to watch heading into the 2024 season.

This will be a two part feature, beginning with players debuting at the FCL and as we move closer to the DSL’s opening day we’ll drop the 2nd part of this feature.

DSL ✈️ FCL: Prospects expected stateside

Brando Mayea – 18 🇨🇺 | 5’11 180 | R/R – CF

Mayea’s professional debut was a solid one and the future for him looks bright!

Brando jumped off the blocks with a hot start, hitting .316 in June.  In July he seemed to struggle some, hitting just .203 but he was able to bounce back with a strong final month helped saw him finish the season slash .276/.382.  He showed some pop, hitting 7 Doubles and 3 HRs. He flashed his 80 grade speed with 22 SB.

On the defensive side Mayea put up 4 OF Assists:

As the DSL Yankees were trying to lock down a playoff spot, Mayea got stronger and in the final month of the season was on fire:

.349/.440/.558 – .998 OPS – 158 wRC+

4 XBH | 4 HR – 7 RBI | 6 SB

Watching Mayea’s off-season BP, the ball seems to be jumping off his bat with a little more umph.  He’s worked hard this offseason, he spent time getting stronger and in some of his offseason BP you can clearly hear the difference in his bat.

Santiago “Gallito” Gomez – 20 🇲🇽 | 5’11 170 | SH/RH – SS/2B

.284/467/.403 – .870 OPS

11 XBH, 3 HR, 32 RBI – 20 SB

16.8 BB% – 17.9 K%

Gomez is heading to the FCL this season after putting up a very good year at the DSL.  Scrappy player that hit near the top of the DSL lineups and played very well in back to back DSL seasons.

Josue Gonzalez – 19 🇻🇪| 5’9 180 | R/R: C

.324/.517/.529 – 1.046 OPS | 16 XBH, 2 HR, 20 RBI | 8 SB

25.9 BB% – 14.3 K% | 181 wRC+ | 31% CS

Gonzalez missed all of 2022, but came back in 2023 as one of the top DSL Players for the Yankees, even making the All Star game. The young Venezuelan catcher slashed: .324/.517/529 – 1.046 OPS with 16 XBH, 2 HR and 20 RBI.  Gonzalez showed great plate discipline posting 26% Walk Rate with a 14% strikeout%.

Josue led the team in Walks, OBP, BB%, OPS, and wRC+.  On the defensive side he threw out 31% of would be stolen base attempts.

Gonzalez was the lone Yankees DSL player to make the DSL All Star team this season.

Gabriel Terrero – 18 🇩🇴 | 5’6 170 | R/S – 2B/3B

.299/.407/.533 | .940 OPS | 146 wRC+

17 XBH | 7 HR – 27 RBI | 14 SB

13.6 BB% – 21.6 K%

Yankees DSL Prospect Gabriel Terrero was arguably the best player of the 2 DSL Yankees squads.

Terrero is on our list of DSL Players to keep an eye on for 2024.  Terrero led off for the DSL Yankees and did a little bit of everything, almost in a Keiner Delgado fashion.  Terrero was the best offensive player last season and was an extremely exciting player to watch!  He could be another player that debuts stateside this season.

Edgleen Perez – 17 🇻🇪 | 5’10 160 | R/R – C

.259/.389/.317 | .705 OPS | 8 XBH – 0 HR, 29 RBI | 5 SB | 102 wRC+

17.1 BB% – 17.7 K%

Perez has been generating some buzz as ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel has listed him a Yankees Top 20 Prospect.  While his offense might not stand out, there’s alot to like about his raw defensive tools and the fact that he turned 17 just before the season started.  Perez could be one of the guys that we see heading stateside come 2024.

Keninson Diaz – 19 🇻🇪| 6’2 190 | RHP

19 G | 5-0 | 32.2 IP | 2.76 ERA – 1.29 WHIP | 26 H, 16 BB, 50 K

13.8 K/9 – 34.7 K% – 11.1 BB% | .208 AVG

Diaz pitched in relief and appeared in 19 games.  He threw 32 2/3 innings to a 2.76 ERA with 50 strikeouts.  Over his final 19+ innings, Diaz pitched to a 2.33 ERA and struck out 33 batters.  Diaz was one of the DSL Yankees best relief pitchers.

Pedro Rodriguez – 20 🇻🇪| 5’10 155 | LHP

16 G | 5-0 | 20 IP | 1.93 ERA – 0.96 WHIP | 17 H, 10 BB, 36 K

11.6 K/9 – 31.3 K$ – 3.21 BB/9 – 8.7 BB% | .173 AVG

Rodriguez was one of the Yankees best pitchers in the Dominican Republic last season.  A reliable arm that shut down opponents and allowed the offense to work.

Omar Gonzalez – 18 🇵🇦 | 6’4 180 | RHP (Returning)

4 GS | 0-0 | 11 IP | 8.18 ERA – 1.91 WHIP | 10 H, 11 BB, 20 K

16.4 K/9 – 35.7 K% – 9 BB/9 – 19.6 BB% | .222 AVG

Omar had a great debut season as a 16 YO pitcher in the DSL 2 years ago, and in 2023 big things were expected from him. Unfortunately an early injury cost him most of the season.  He now heads off to the FCL where we’re still expecting to see good things from the young RHP.
