Yankees Rule 5 Prospect Eligible’s 2023
In the upcoming months, the New York Yankees will have to make some tough decisions for the team’s 40-man roster, as some of the Yankee’s top prospects are eligible for the Rule 5.
For those who do not understand the complexities of the Rule 5 draft, players signed at the age of 18 or younger need to be added to the team’s 40-man roster within five seasons or they become eligible for the draft. Players who signed at the age of 19 or older need to be protected within four seasons.
This means the Yankees have a certain period to protect their top prospects players via their 40-man roster. It is impossible to protect every player that the team wants. Thus, the Yankees must decide on who they will protect for next year, this means the team must clear space on their current 40-man roster.
Now that Jasson Dominguez and Austin Wells are on the 40-man roster, Let’s look at some of the eligible players that need to be protected.
Agustin Ramirez C – 1B
The 21-year-old right-handed Catcher could be the best catcher in the system in 2021 and 2022 playing in the rookie Level Gulf Coast League, this year started the season in Low-A Tampa. After just 56 games he was promoted to High A where, he put some impressive numbers in 27 games 384/430/714, ultimately sending him to Somerset. The fast track he was on would seem to imply the Yankees would add Ramirez to the 40-man Roster this winter. A scout said about his offense “A Combo of plate discipline and power, Impossible to strike out, Defense got a plus arm, an above-average receiver and a catcher, like to see improve as a blocker.
Clayton Beeter P
Traded for Joey Gallo to the Dodgers last year, started the season in AA going 6-2 with an ERA 2.08, and was promoted to triple-A where he has struggled with his control especially the second time around the lineup. His high arm slot creates a downhill plane and deception, and his ability to tunnel his pitches makes him harder to hit. If Beeter can control his pitches, I see him as a good relief pitcher in the MLB.
Andres Chaparro 3B/1B – DH
At the start of the year for Scranton, he went hitless in his first seven games, walked three times, and struck out 13 times during the hitless streak. After the slow start to the season, Chaparro slashed at .351/.411/.732 with 10 HRs from April 8th to May 10th. On April 15th Stanton got sidelined with a Hamstring strain for six weeks, Chappy would have been a smart move for the Yankees who needed a power hitter in the lineup. The Yankees never gave Chappy a chance to show his talent in the Majors. In his minor league career, one of his problems other than his defense is the amount of contact he makes, and his strikeout rate is around 20 to 25 percent, the MLB average K% is 22.4%. finishing the season with .247/.331/.444. My takeaway is that Chaparro shows the ability to adjust on the go, and I hope the Yankees protect him in the draft.
Jared Serna IF
This year he was impressive at Low A, he slashed .283/.350/.483 19 home runs and 19 Stolen bases in 95 games. He was promoted to high A where he plays 27 games slashing .287/.350/.389 10 stolen bases, with a K rate of just 18%. Serna is still a young prospect (turned 21 this year). The Yankees may be able to protect him from the draft. His best position is 2nd base, he has the versatility to play all the infield positions, in 470 chances only making 12 errors. I see him as a super-utility in the Major with average speed and a good glove.
Carson Coleman RHP
Coleman in 2022 was pitching well in Somerset before elbow injury ended his season, posting a 2.86 ERA in 44 IP with 15 saves. Per scouts, he has a double-plus fastball, which will drive his value up as he continues to get better command and refine his off-speed pitches. If The Yankees decide to protect Coleman, he should start the 2024 season at Triple-A and keep an eye down the line for a future bullpen arm.
Other Rule 5 eligibility the Yankees may decide to protect are:
Mitch Spence RHP – This year at Scranton 8-8 4.47 ERA 163 IP 153 SO (see him as RP)
Osiel Rodriguez RHP – This year at 3 Levels (ROK, Low A, High A) 25 Games 2-0 3.62 ERA 37.1 IP 53 SO, the Yankees signed him as an international free agent at 16 years old. He was ranked the best international prospect in 2018, there is potential to climb through the organization if they decide to keep him.
Christopher Familia OF – at Low A and High A slashing 307 Avg 22 home runs 63 RBI and .995 OPS in 261 at bat. I can see him as a trade chip this offseason before the draft.
The Yankees will have around 10 open spots in the 40-man roster at the end of the year plus any free agents or trades the team makes. Which players the team will decide to protect? There is risk involved in choosing players and which ones to make available, and we will hopefully have a clearer answer to these questions soon.
